Language Cluster (GBK Language) conducted a workshop under a theme An Insight into Translation with a speaker from Monash University, Australia, Eni Candra Tampubolon, MA on 11 December 2013. Taking place in Language Laboratory of IT Del, this workshop was opened by the vice rector of academic affairs of IT Del, Dr. Arlinta C. Barus, ST, M.InfoTech and attended by the chairlady of Language Cluster, Rentauli M. Silalahi, S.Pd., M.Ed., as well as the members of this cluster, Mia Naiborhu, SP, M.Si, Santi Manalu, M.Pd., and Kisno Shinoda.

Eni, as an experienced translator and interpreter in Australia, started this workshop by conveying two quotations from two experts in translation studies. She quoted Mona Bakers statement that a translator should work from a foreign language into their native language or language of habitual usage. Then, she added a quotation from Jeremy Munday stating that the first step to do before translating a text is to find out the purpose of the text and then determine a strategy to deal with it. She also explained six strategies in translating a text such as: 1) Strategies at the word level; 2) Strategies above the word level collocations; 3) Strategies at the collocation level; 4) Strategies above the word level – idioms and fixed expressions; 5) Grammatical equivalence; and 6) Cohesion.

This workshop began at 04:00 p.m. and lasted for one hour and a half. At last, Eni closed her presentation by stating that there is not any correct translation but there is a better one. May in the future such a valuable workshop for Language Cluster can be conducted for more.
