On Friday, December 2, 2016 29 Engineering Management students class of 2014 went to Medan to pitch seven business models in Clapham Collective Medan, a co-working space and business incubator providing work facility as well as facilitating start-up companies in Medan.
The activity started with the introduction to Clapham and the jury, Chris Angkasa (Co-founder Clapham Medan), Edy Tan (Co-founder Medan Tech Valley), Ben Jhonson (CTO Deal Medan), Ericko Hartanto (Cofounder Best Holiday) and Ricardo Situmeang (Lecturer at Engineering Management Study Program of IT Del). Each group was given 10 minutes to deliver their presentation and 3 minutes for Q to A session.

Among the business plans pitched in the presentation were Retro business plan, a car rental platform in Toba Samosir and Del Summer School, which would use Del’s 6-year experience collaborating with Czech University of Life Science for running summer schools. The presentation about Del Summer School was particularly stressed on its Value Preposition indicated by the percentage of domestic and foreign students attracted to learn about natural science, culture, and customs, while enjoying the panorama and cultural artifacts around Lake Toba. Del’s strategic location has helped this concept potential to attract the target as long as it is organized interestingly by tourism packages combining scientific knowledge and visits to special destinations.

The third presentation was BOKAV, a business concept using the leftover of tapioca flour from Hutahaean manufacturer near Institut Teknologi Del as the ingredient for brownies. Students were inspired to make brownies made of the leftover of tapioca flour when they did a practical work for Production System course. Then they tried to submit the research proposal to Dikti and won the competition. Silangit airport, which is now developing is believed to be going to increase the demand for Bokay as a unique gift from Toba.

G-Candy, a candy made of a mixture of garlic extract and honey proven to have reduced diabetes and cholesterol levels became the fourth concept presented.  Another business plan pitch was Gifon, a platform for courier service to customers-oriented customized gifts and presents. The next presentation was Del Bakery, a platform for customized cakes near Lake Toba. The last presentation was Banana Blossom Tea, which used the heart of banana as tea powder believed to be able to delay aging and diminish diabetes and cholesterol levels.

After the presentation finished, there was a sharing session from 4 sources, which were a short presentation on Deal Medan, Best Holiday and explanation on Clapham Collective Medan as well as the goals of Medan Tech Valley. This session was closed with the thank you remark from the Del lecturer, Ricardo Situmeang to the host in Medan who well-welcomed and shared their time and place for Engineering Management students doing their business plan pitching.
