IT Del sent three teams to compete in International Education Centre debate. The debating teams were Kristiani Sirait & Christine Cecylia Munthe (ITD Team 1); Ester Melati Manalu & Anastasya Hutasoit (ITD Team 2); Kartika Karianta Pardede & Erjan Sarwono Sirait (ITD Team 3). In this time of debate competition, the system used was British Parliament Debate which offered the debaters the opportunity to engage a variety of controversial motions (debate topics) and to express their opinions verbally.

This open tournament was held on the 3rd and 10th of November 2013 at Malaka School. Before the debate the committee, on Saturday, November 2, 2013, held a debate seminar and debate exhibition to equip the participants with British Parliament (BP) format that will be used in this competition and showed them the BP exhibition. In this seminar also, the debaters were informed that the participants will be divided into two categories namely the novice team  team who has not had any experience in a debate and the breaking team  those that have had experiences in a debate. The division of the team was announced after finishing preliminary rounds dated on 3rd November 2013. All IT Del teams participated in the preliminary rounds. They competed the participants from senior high school and university students. When the motion in every round was launched, the debaters had 15 minutes to prepare the ideas in the debate. After finishing three rounds, the committee decided that IT Del team 1 and IT Del team 2 were eligible to go to quarter final for breaking teams and IT Del team 3 passed successfully to Novice Semi Final on 10th November 2013. Due to miscommunication between the committee and IT Del team, IT Del team 1 and IT Del team 2 did not participate in the fourth round for breaking team which was held in that day and they were disqualified from the final breaking team. Although these teams cannot compete in the final round, they had given their best to compete other participants.

On November 10, 2013, IT Del Team 3 competed in the novice semifinal and grand finale. A tight competition schedule (morning to afternoon) did not lessen ITD’s team spirit to gain the championship. IT Del team became more excited when they successfully got a ticket to grand finale. Finally, in the grand finale, this could get the third position; the 3rd champion. This achievement has made us proud and we hope IT Del students will keep participating in the event like this, said Kartika; one of the IT Del team 3 who won the debate.

This winning was not without effort, therefore sincere thanks were addressed to everyone participating in supporting the team to win the debate mostly to the IT Del English lecturers who had given time and effort to train the students.

Congratulation to IT Del for this great achievement.
