In this year of 2019, Engineering Management Study Program of IT Del involves in Community Service activities under the theme “Accompaniment and Capacity Enhancement for Small Scale Enterprises through andaliman (Zantoxylum acanthopodium) herb plant-based derivative products development”. Andaliman is an endemic herb plant in the Area of Lake Toba well-known as traditional Bataknese cuisine spice. The fast growing development of Lake Toba area along with the change of land function has raised a concern on the extinction of andaliman plant which wildly grows in the forests around Lake Toba area. Engineering Management Study Program of IT Del considers such phenomenon a threat for the andaliman plant preservation.
On the other hand, the determination of Lake Toba area as one of 10 most strategic national tourist destinations by the government has opened opportunities for tourism-supported industries such as eco-tourism, tourism-supporting business and local’s unique souvenirs industry. Aware of those opportunities, IT Del’s Engineering Management Study Program has partnered with some small scale entrepreneurs in Lake Toba Area to produce derivative products of andaliman. Taman Eden 100 situated in Lumban Julu sub-district managed by Marandus Sirait, the Kalpataru 2005 recipient long initiating andaliman cultivation has become the partner as a hub for andaliman farmers.
In this partnership-based community service program by IT Del’s Engineering Management Study Program, the objective is to help innovation for derivative andaliman products continued by production process design, production tools design and the business models. In addition, small scale enterprises will be helped in designing product specification potential for the market and preparing for legal documents. Through the partnership-based community service program, more people are expected to gain economic benefits, while remaining to keep ecological balance through biodiversity conservation in this area.
